Monday 8 December 2008Saskia Rijtema Engineer of the Year 2008
Saskia Rijtema, senior project engineer at Heerema Marine Contractors, has been elected engineer of the year 2008 by the Dutch Royal Institute of Engineers (Koninklijk Instituut van Ingenieurs KIVI NIRIA). Her election was based on a combination of her personality, entrepreneurship and innovating ability.
According to the jury Saskia Rijtema is not only able to handle technically very complex situations, but also knows how to lead and motivate a large team, and how to keep the client satisfied with the project’s progress. On top of all that she has shown she can combine her very demanding job with her pregnancies and motherhood.
From 2006 to 2008 she was project engineer of a re-installation project in the Gulf of Mexico, which led to her nomination for engineer of the year 2008. As project engineer for this project, Saskia Rijtema was responsible for all technical aspects. The project comprised the replacement of Pipe Line End Terminations (PLET’s) within the existing sub sea pipeline infrastructure. This meant the pipe lines had to be recovered from the sea bottom at 2,000 meter deep, and, after connection of the PLET’s, had to be placed back in their original position. This had never been done before. To ensure the success of the project vessels had to be modified, new software developed and also required the use of remotely controlled robots. The entire project was completed within one year.
Saskia Rijtema joined Heerema Marine Contractors in 1997 after finishing her studies in Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands. She lives together with her partner and their two sons.
