Monday 24 August 2009Captured fishermen escape after overpowering Somali pirates
Thirty-four Egyptian fishermen, who have been held captive since April, have overpowered their Somali pirate captors and gained their freedom. Somali pirates hijacked two fishing vessels, the ‘Momtaz 1’ and the ‘Samara Ahmed’ four months ago. The fishermen finally escaped last Thursday, August 13, after seizing one of the pirate’s weapons. Two pirates were killed during the ensuing shootout. The fishermen captured several pirates and rescued one who had been stabbed and thrown overboard.
