The global economic crisis may have hit several industries, particularly the IT sector, resulting in pink slips and costcutting measures, but job vacancies galore in shipping industry, according to a top official of an educational institute offering courses in the field. Most people were looking at the IT industry for lucrative career options till the recession, but not many were aware that the shipping industry also creates huge demand with salaries ranging from a minimum of Rs 25,000 per month to a whopping Rs 10 lakh, Managing Director of Chennai School of Shipping Management G V Ramanigopal said.
There were about 128 institutes in the country offering various courses on shipping, he said adding "every year only 6,500 candidates passed out while the demand in the industry was around 20,000 officers". Many young students now had started looking at the shipping industry as an option for a serious profession.
He said that normally cadets passing out of shipping institutes are recruited in the junior rank with a salary of around Rs 25,000 per month. But, on completion of more training and proving oneself, the salary can go up. "Each cadet after completing all the necessary examinations conducted by Director General of Shipping within a stipulated period of five years, i.e., by the time he reaches the age of 27, is eligible to get a pay packet of Rs seven lakh per month. Even if he manages to get placed in any oil tankers or gas or chemical carriers, the salary may increase to Rs 10 lakh per month."
