Monday 4 May 2009Port Canaveral to benefit from stimulus money
Florida Today reports that Port Canaveral will get US$10.2 million in economic stimulus money to dredge and maintain its federal channels.
The US Army Corps of Engineers announced details of the funding earlier this week, but the level of funding falls well short of what port officials had hoped for - and what they say is needed to stimulate new jobs.
"There are some other projects here that we felt should have been included in the stimulus," said J Stanley Payne, chief executive officer of Canaveral Port Authority. "I am quite disappointed."
The Corps funding is part of the US$787 billion federal stimulus package President Barack Obama signed into law in February.
US$8 million of the funds will be used to dredge sand from just north of Port Canaveral's main channel to be placed on nearby beaches. A similar sand bypass project in 2007 put the dredged sand along about 5,400ft of shoreline just south of the port.
The Corps also will give the port US$1.5 million for maintenance dredging and US$700,000 to complete monitoring for the environmental permit for the sand bypass project.
