Ship contract to bring jobs to Mobile, Ala.

Austal USA says it will double the size of its Mobile shipyard and add about 1,800 jobs to handle a Navy shipbuilding contract worth nearly $5 billion.

Congress approved a plan on Tuesday to split the purchase of 20 vessels between Austal and Lockheed Martin Corp.

Rep. Jo Bonner, a Republican congressman, who represents Mobile, says there will be long-term benefits from the contract to build littoral combat ships in Mobile. President Barack Obama says he will sign the bill.

Bonner and Navy leaders say the plan is cost-effective and will improve national defense.

The ships are designed to operate close to shore.

The Navy had set Dec. 30 as the last day for authorization of the split LCS purchase before it would revert to the previous winner-take-all plan.
